LET'S CHAT
Shayla is a networker and creative at heart. After moving to Minneapolis during the pandemic, she launched the Let's Chat conversation series to safely build relationships. The digital series creates space for real people to talk, share stories and experiences and have real conversations that push participants and listeners forward. She working to meet 100 Minnesotans through the series. Participants have discussed everything from grief, to money management, surviving Minnesota winters, the work of doulas , life after incarceration and overcoming fear of dogs.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Shayla participates in numerous community activities throughout the year and enjoys speaking with students at local high schools and universities. Most recently she spoke with students at Ascension Catholic School, moderated a virtual panel for NextUp Twin Cities, served as an emcee for the Domestic Abuse Project "United in Healing" virtual gala and emceed the AKA Delta Phi Omega Chapter's Debutante Cotillion in Minnesota.
While working in North Carolina, Shayla emceed events including the American Heart Association's Greenville Heart and Stroke Walk in 2019 and the Relay Purple Ribbon Gala in 2019.
In Florida, she emceed the Ms. Wheelchair Florida Pageant for three consecutive years, the Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival Gala for two consecutive years and twice emceed the G3 Life Applications Gala focused on empowering Tampa’s youth. She has also emceed fashion shows for the Junior League of St. Pete, Babycycle, the Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival and The Fashion Movement. Shayla has spoken to classes at the University of South Florida, Armwood High School and Eisenhower Middle School and participated in the Doretha Edgecomb Female Symposiums at Brandon Epic High School and Caminiti Exceptional Center. She addressed an audience of 100 girls during Truly Valued's Annual Tea Party 4 Girls.
MENTORING
Shayla has mentored station interns, teaching broadcast journalism techniques from the field. Between live reports, she works with students on writing scripts, voice inflection and standups. Outside of work, she meets 1-on-1 for career chats over lunch. Some interns have been accepted into graduate school and landed first reporting positions.
